Corinthian Stater, a copy of an ancient Greek coin it has the figure of Pegasus the mythological winged horse, Qoppa symbolize the archaic spelling of the city (Qορινθος). The Stater, as Greek currency, first as ingots, and later as coin, circulated from 8th century BC, To AC 50. Pegasus appears on many coins from the ancient world, but it is the Corinthian silver stater that is most highly prized, both for its beauty and for its history.

Pegasus the winged horse in Greek Mythology was involved in some of the most intriguing tales of the times, a mythical winged divine stallion, and one of the most recognized creatures in Greek mythology. Pegasus was a child of the Olympian god Poseidon, in his role as horse-god, and foaled by the Gorgon Medusa upon her death, when the hero Perseus decapitated her. Pegasus was also the brother of Chrysaor and the uncle of Geryon. Pegasus aided the hero Bellerophon in his fight against the Chimera. The beautiful horse was wild and answered to no one, until Bellerophon, with the aid of a golden bridle given him by Athena, tamed the horse. Bellerophon later became King of Corinth, entwining the city forever with the flying horse, the goddess of wisdom and the god of the sea. Pegasus and Athena left Bellerophon and continued to Olympus where he was stabled with Zeus' other steeds, and was given the task of carrying Zeus' thunderbolts, along with other members of his entourage, his attendants/handmaidens/shield bearers/shieldmaidens, Astrape and Bronte. Because of his years of faithful service to Zeus, Pegasus was later honored with transformation into a constellation. On the day of his catasterism, when Zeus transformed him into a constellation and a single feather fell to the earth near the city of Tarsus.

The symbolism of Pegasus varies with time. Symbolic of wisdom and especially of fame from the Middle Ages until the Renaissance, Pegasus became associated with poetry around the 19th century, as the originator or fountainhead of sources from which the poets gained their inspiration.
