The Phaistos Disc is an incredible object, and to have any chance of understanding it we need to know where it came from. By contextual evidence we believe the disk dates to around 1700 BCE. Crete, at that time, was the home of a Bronze Age civilization called the Minoans.

The Minoans were one of the earliest urban societies in what is now Greece, ruling the island from roughly 2,000-1,500 BCE. They built their cities around large temple complexes filled with colorful art. The city of Phaistos was one of their most important. Many Cretan cities and figures would later influence mainstream Greek culture and mythology.

Using what previous studies have shown about Cretan hieroglyphics, and the
scripts Minoan Linear A and Mycenaean Linear B from ancient Greece, the researcher was
able to identify three key words:

IQEKURJA, which may mean “pregnant mother” and/or “goddess.”
IQE, which may mean “mother” and/or “goddess” and which appears repeatedly on the disk.
IQEPAJE or IQE-PHAE, which may mean “shining mother” or “goddess.”

The jewelry of the Minoan civilization based on Bronze Age Crete demonstrates, as with other Minoan visual art forms, not only a sophisticated technological knowledge and an ingenuity of design but also a joy in vibrantly representing nature and a love of flowing, expressive, shapes and forms. Jewelry took the form of diadems, necklaces, bracelets, Rings of gold. They often took the form of flowers such as lilies and in some cases with incised decorations particularly leaves, axes and cones but also animals and birds. Rings deserve special mention as they were not only decorative but also used in an administrative capacity as seals. Such Rings are usually found in Mycenaean tombs but originally are Minoan.
